The fifteenth annual edition of our ranching heritage celebration will be a lot more like the original version, in that we will be back at the Granny Martin Museum Properety the ways of Spanish California as best as we can .October ,17 and 18 are the dates to set aside for a trip to Descanso where the event takes place in the Martin Museum from 9:00 to 5:00 on Saturday and Sunday. Most of the activities are on Saturday and Sunday .. Make a weekend out of the fun and camp for free in the meadow ,, there are no hookups, but we do make water available for the horses. If you bring your dog he will have to stay in the car, he will not be allowed in the activities area. The event is free for children and $10 for their parents but there is no parking charge and we have plenty room for everyone including motor homes. Be sure to come dressed in your best old time outfit and help add to festivities.
Saturday opens at 9:00 officially, however the roping gets underway a little earlier, the vendor barn, food and the other important stuff becomes available. There will be music and cowboy poetry throughout the day, along with a series of demonstrations and hands on participation for all age kids. You can learn about animals, (try milking a real goat) or learn what to do with a pesky rattlesnake, or how to avoid mountain lions visit a Mountain Man Camp and learn the skills of wilderness survival, how to pan for gold, stamp designs on leather, how to make a rawhide reata, spin yarn, cook in a Dutch oven, pack a mule, horse or donkey, ride in a wagon drawn by mules, see how the ranchers of Baja California live, learn how to throw a lariat, how to put on a horseshoe and see what blacksmiths can do with a piece of hot metal, we will have more things going on then you will have time to see in one day. Through out the day there will horsemanship demonstrations by Leslie Desmond,, Jerry Tindell, Lee Graff, and Stan Kruml...
Many fine artists and craftsmen will have their wares on display. We will also have some of the gear made by Granny Martin the Shows’ mentor to enjoy. The Kumeyaay Indians will have a presentation and sale of the fine baskets and pottery that they continue to make in the tradition of their forefathers.
Sunday will be a repeat of the same things along with a team sorting competition in the horse arena.
